Turning 40: The 5 Chinese Philosophies That Shaped My Life and Classy Mandarin
Today is a day of deep reflection for me, both personally and for the future of my work teaching Mandarin.
I am turning 40. Exactly one year ago, I launched Classy Mandarin, and started this Substack, and went public with my vision for teaching.
I chose this path not just because I am a native speaker with a linguistic degree and teaching background, but because I’ve worked in high-stakes corporate environments. I witnessed firsthand the massive gap between Mandarin that is technically correct and Mandarin that is culturally connected.
There, I met expats who had lived in China for over a decade, yet their Mandarin remained strictly textbook, sound correct, but culturally disconnected.
Having witnessed this gap firsthand, I wanted to provide the missing piece of the puzzle: helping you shift from mere accuracy to deep, genuine connection.
As we begin this next chapter, I’m sharing the five Chinese philosophies that have quietly guided me over the years. I truly believe they hold the key to transforming your own path to fluency.
5 Chinese Philosophies That Have Shaped My Lifestyle
1. Effortless Alignment (无为 - Wú Wéi): Ditching the Friction
Many language learners sweat over memorization and rigid rules, creating massive internal friction. Wu Wei is about effortless action. In my corporate life, I saw how forcing translations word-for-word failed. This year, I will teach you how to align your language with natural native logic patterns, so your Chinese flows out seamlessly without mental exhaustion.
2. Fluidity (上善若水 - Shàng Shàn Ruò Shuǐ): Adapting to the Room
Lao Tzu wrote that “The highest good is like water.” Water shapes itself to its environment. When I moved to Belgium ten years ago, and when I navigated high-stakes corporate rooms before that, I learned that language fluency is about adaptability. I am going to teach you how to read the room culturally, shifting your speech smoothly to fit any social or professional setting.
3. True Mastery (吃得苦中苦,方为人上人): No Shortcuts, Just Substance
There is an old proverb: “Only by enduring the bitterest of hardships can one rise above the ordinary.” There are no shortcuts to high-level fluency.
Because I don’t give you social media fluff, I won’t promise you “fluency in 30 days.” Instead, I am giving you the deep, structured frameworks that require real focus but yield permanent, elite results.
4. Trusting Deep Maturity (大器晚成 - Dà Qì Wǎn Chéng): Playing the Long Game
This means “A great vessel takes a long time to complete.” True language depth and psychological comfort in a foreign language mature over time. Turning 40 reminds me that the best things are built with patience. I am here to support you in building sustainable, long-term habits so your fluency becomes a natural part of who you are.
5. Inner Substance over Outer Noise (内圣外王 - Nèi Shèng Wài Wáng)
This ancient ideal translates to “Inner sage, outer king.” It means your outer success is a natural reflection of your internal depth. This philosophy is the exact reason I have built a thriving Substack with lovely, dedicated supporters without ever filming a single video of myself. I focus entirely on substance and deep work, not social media fluff. This year, I will help you build that same inner linguistic confidence, so when you do speak, your words carry weight, authority, and genuine warmth.
What to Expect in the Next Chapter
I am combining my corporate business background with my years of Chinese Mandarin coaching experience to deliver something rare: Mandarin that builds connection (not just business connection).
In the coming year, this publication will continue to step away from rigid textbook corrections and dive straight into real-life connection.
We will explore the hidden nuances, Chinese culture, philosophy, and the unspoken codes that actually unlock true connection and form the three pillars of Guanxi.
To every reader and supporter who has been with me this past year: thank you. You are the reason I love doing this work.
And if you are new here and want to learn how to communicate with impact and true depth, I’m always here to help you get there.

I’d love to hear from you as we start this next chapter together. Which of these five philosophies felt like the missing piece of the puzzle for your Mandarin flow? Let me know in the comments!
生日快乐,老师!
